Welcome to Stonehaven Since the first plantings of vines in the early 1800's, South Eastern Australia's wine production has evolved into a rich tapestry of regional distinctions, each with its own singular, viticultural identity. The Limestone Coast region, which extends from Padthaway to Mount Gambier, encompasses a number of distinctive growing areas. Stonehaven takes the fullest advantage of these regional differences with prime vineyards located in Padthaway, Wrattonbully, Coonawarra and the Elgin Valley (click here for map). Stonehaven was the name of the first settlement in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, named by a group of pioneers who hailed from the town of Stonehaven in Scotland. The farmland they established in 1846 is now home to Stonehaven's Wrattonbully vineyard. To learn more about the Scottish town of Stonehaven, visit http://www.stonehavenguide.net/ The Stonehaven winery is located just south of the township of Padthaway. Padthaway is considered to be the "gateway" to the famous Limestone Coast region, which is characterized by a bedrock of limestone with rich terra rossa soil that is ideal for growing grapes. The winery was opened in March 1998. It features the very latest in winemaking technology that allows careful monitoring and control of the winemaking process, offering maximum flexibility to the winemaker. This ensures that the special characters of each batch of regional fruit can be maximized to create the very best examples of premium, cool climate wines. Stonehaven features a contemporary Cellar Door and function center, set amongst the property's towering red gum trees and encircled by an expansive sea of vines. Aside from offering Stonehaven wines for tastings and for sale, the Cellar Door also hosts rotating exhibitions by local artists from throughout the region. |
